Welcome to Nicholas County Schools where the educational environment for students and staff focuses on teaching and learning in the 21st century. Technology has opened the world to students and staff in avenues that were unknown a mere ten years ago. That technology will also open opportunities to students in the next ten years that may not currently be imaginable. To succeed in this world, students and staff must engage in more challenging curriculum and instruction. The task is challenging but can be accomplished if planned strategically and implemented in incremental steps. To begin the 21st century journey, Nicholas County Schools will focus on the following for the 2007-2008 school year:
1) build awareness of 21st century teaching and learning; 2) implement a research based K-3 reading model; 3) complete a K-12 math audit and plan appropriate professional development; 4) use ongoing, formative assessments K-12 to plan effective instruction; 5) provide workforce and college preparatory opportunities for secondary students; and 6) promote writing across the curriculum K-12. These six focal points will continually emphasize problem solving, critical thinking skills, and creating innovators and inventors of learning. The Board of Education and Superintendent Beverly Kingery welcome the opportunity to promote 21st century leaders in Nicholas County Schools.
